The ACLU of Michigan wants to ensure that people who are in Grand Rapids and are facing economic insecurity or are unhoused know their rights in light of ordinances enacted in 2023 that target this vulnerable population. Here, you'll find information about what you can and can’t do under the ordinances. You’ll also learn how to file a complaint if the GRPD unlawfully takes or throws away your property. Our aim is to empower you with information and tools to protect yourself and your rights.
If you believe the GRPD unlawfully took your property, you can download and complete our Complaint Form, which will allow you to start the formal complaint process with the Grand Rapids Office of Oversight and Public Accountability (OPA). The form was created by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan to make it easier for people who believe their property has been unlawfully thrown away or impounded by the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) to file a complaint.
