 ACLU Blasts Court Decision Denying Michigan Families Domestic Partner Benefits

IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
May 7, 2008

Detroit -- The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan blasted a Michigan Supreme ruling today, which upheld a lower court’s decision that Proposal 2, passed by Michigan voters in 2004, prohibits public employers from offering domestic partner benefits.  The majority opinion was written by Justice Steven Markman,which was joined by four other justices with a dissent written by Justice Marilyn Kelly and Justice Michael Cavanagh.

State legislators are pushing through an unnecessary and wasteful bill which would prohibit abortion methods that are already banned by the ultra-conservative U.S. Supreme Court.

 ACLU Wins Federal Lawsuit Challenging Michigan Primary Election Law

March 26, 2008

 

DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan applauded a federal judge’s ruling today barring the Michigan Secretary of State from providing the party preference declarations of voters solely to the two major political parties of the State in accordance with the primary election law. The lawsuit was filed in January on behalf of the Green Party of Michigan, Libertarian Party of Michigan, the Reform Party of Michigan, the Metro Times and Winning Strategies, a political consulting firm.

 School Should Recognize Student Group Opposing Surveillance Cameras

ANN ARBOR – In a letter to Ann Arbor Public Schools today, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan threatened to sue the school district unless the superintendent reversed a Pioneer High School decision denying school club status to a student group opposing the installation of surveillance cameras.  Pioneer administrators have refused to afford the group the same privileges as other student clubs because it is political group that opposes a school decision.

 Salem Township Residents Have a Right to Criticize Officials, Says ACLU Lawsuit

 Coalition Deeply Disappointed by Court Decision to Dismiss Prop 2 Lawsuit

DETROIT – The civil rights coalition challenging Proposal 2, the 2006 ballot initiative banning affirmative action in Michigan, expressed deep disappointed with a federal judge’s decision to dismiss their lawsuit. The coalition had asked the court to strike down the ban because it discriminates against students of color by removing race from consideration in admissions, while allowing the consideration of virtually all other non-academic factors.

 Jury Forces Saginaw County Jail to Pay $145,000 in Prison Abuse Case

IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 12, 2008 

DETROIT – A federal jury today found the Saginaw County Jail responsible for the egregious and unconstitutional treatment of detainees and awarded 4 plaintiffs $145,000 in damages. The lawsuit challenged policies that allowed prison personnel to strip detainees and place them naked in a cell referred to as "the hole." In 2005, the ACLU of Michigan joined the case, which was originally filed in 2001.
