DETROIT – The civil rights coalition challenging Proposal 2, the 2006 ballot initiative banning affirmative action in Michigan, expressed deep disappointed with a federal judge’s decision to dismiss their lawsuit. The coalition had asked the court to strike down the ban because it discriminates against students of color by removing race from consideration in admissions, while allowing the consideration of virtually all other non-academic factors.

Agree to stop breath tests of minors without warrants

In April 2005, the ACLU of Michigan filed a lawsuit on behalf of 21 families in Ingham County Circuit Court seeking a declaratory ruling that Proposal 2, which amended the Michigan Constitution in November 2004 to prohibit gay marriage, allows public employers to offer health care insurance, otherwise called domestic partnership benefits, to lesbian and gay families.

ACLU Asks Federal Court to Block Illegal Spying Program

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - March 9, 2006

DETROIT- Saying that the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping of Americans is flatly illegal and unconstitutional, the American Civil Liberties Union today asked a federal court in Detroit to block the program immediately.

The ACLU also criticized Congress for brokering a reported deal that allows the White House to bypass judicial oversight of the controversial program.

"The President does not have a blank check that allows him to ignore basic constitutional rights of Americans," said ACLU of Michigan Executive Director Kary Moss.  "His conduct so far has shown an utter disregard of the law.  It is time for Congress to stand up to the abuse of executive powers and stand for the ordinary citizen.  Congress should not cover up his illegal program."

DETROIT – In a case of national importance, the Supreme Court will hear arguments from the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan today that a state law is unconstitutional because it prevents poor people from getting legal representation in the appeal of most guilty plea cases.  Michigan is the only state in the nation that does not allow judges to appoint lawyers and to deny attorneys in such circumstances.

ACLU of Michigan calls on Legislature to investigate cost of Matrix program

On Thursday, March 18, the House Joint Appropriations Committee will discuss the MATRIX (Multi State Anti Terrorism Information Exchange) system, a program that ties together government and commercial databases in order to allow state and local police to conduct detailed searches on particular individuals.   Expected to provide information is John Ort, Director of the Emergency Management Division of the Department of State Police.
