The Secretary of State's Office announced yesterday the creation of two new identification cards that purport to enhance the security of Michigan driver's licenses. In reality, these licenses will make Michigan ID's a prime target for identity thieves by complying with the invasive and unnecessary Real ID Act.
Real ID turns state driver's licenses into national identity cards for all Americans. These identity cards will be linked to a massive database available to every state in the country and the federal government, creating a one-stop shop for identity thieves. The Real ID license will include a standardized "machine-readable zone" that will make it easy for anybody in private industry to snap up the personal data on these licenses.
