Join the ACLU of Michigan Western Branch and the Duncan Littlefair Great Speakers Series on January 24th for the Grand Rapids premiere of The Loving Story, a moving documentary about the power of justice to transcend hatred and discrimination.
In 1958, childhood friends Mildred and Richard Loving fell in love and were married, only to be dragged from their bed and thrown in jail for the crime of interracial marriage. The couple were ultimately banned from living together within the state of Virginia.
After the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Mildred Loving wrote to Robert Kennedy to ask whether the new law would make it legal for the Lovings to return to Virginia as man and wife. Kennedy recommended that they take their case to the ACLU, where two young lawyers fought for the couple's right to love each other all the way to the Supreme Court.
