Free Speech

Freedom of speech is protected in the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights and is guaranteed to all Americans. As a core founding principle, free speech has a long history in America. Safeguarding this cherished freedom is the ACLU’s ongoing commitment. Since 1920, the ACLU has worked to preserve our freedom of speech.

ACLU, Insane Clown Posse Appeal Judge’s Decision to Dismiss Juggalos’ Case Against the FBI

2014-07-08 00:00:00

The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, along with the music duo Insane Clown Posse (ICP), appealed a federal judge’s order dismissing the Juggalos’ case against the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The lawsuit was originally filed in January on behalf of Juggalos, or fans of ICP, claiming that their constitutional rights to expression and association were violated when the U.S. government wrongly and arbitrarily classified the entire fan base as a “hybrid” criminal gang.

Along with Insane Clown Posse, we're appealing a federal judge’s order dismissing the Juggalos’ case against the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Back in January, we filed the lawsuit on behalf of Juggalos (fans of ICP) after the U.S. government arbitrarily classified the entire fan base as a “hybrid” criminal gang.

This afternoon, we're in court where a federal judge will hear arguments in our lawsuit with the Insane Clown Posse. The lawsuit challenges the FBI’s erroneous and arbitrary designation of all fans of ICP, known as Juggalos, as a “hybrid” criminal gang.

ACLU to Detroit: Fireworks Curfew Violates the Rights of Young People and their Parents

2014-06-19 00:00:00

DETROIT - The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan sent a letter to Detroit officials today, urging them to refrain from enforcing a citywide 6 p.m. juvenile curfew enacted specifically for the annual Independence Day fireworks display on Monday on the Detroit River. The ACLU of Michigan asserts that the ordinance is too broad and that it unfairly and unconstitutionally criminalizes innocent activity of minors and their parents.

Another Victory for Free Speech in Politics

Fans of free speech can breathe a sigh of relief, as the State of Michigan has backed off of an unconstitutional policy preventing sitting U.S. Representative John Conyers from being on the August ballot.

This comes as a victory for many who felt that the removal of Rep. Conyers from the ballot was unfair and a hindrance to the right of everyone to participate in the political process.

DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan filed a federal lawsuit late yesterday arguing that Congressman John Conyers should not be tossed from the August primary ballot because Michigan’s law prohibiting individuals who are not registered to vote from circulating candidate nominating petitions is unconstitutional.

The case was filed on behalf of two ardent supporters of Congressman Conyers, one who has voted him since 1964 and one who circulated nominating petitions on his behalf.

DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan applauded the Michigan Legislature today for passing necessary legislation to repeal a state law that prohibited out-of-state residents from collecting petition signatures in Michigan. A lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Michigan earlier this year asking a federal judge to strike down the law was dismissed after the legislature acted.
