DETROIT - President Trump’s desperate diatribe this evening was another pathetic attempt to sow doubt in our elections and undermine our democracy. We’ve seen this show before. Fortunately, our elections and democracy do not belong to any politician. They belong to the people.
Our elections do not rest with Washington or even Lansing. They rest with our trusted local clerks. Across Michigan, our local clerks, their staff, and poll workers work hard to make sure every eligible voter can cast a ballot, and every vote is counted. Our local clerks help voters navigate the process, recruit community members to be poll workers, maintain polling locations, and carry out the checks and balances that protect the integrity of every ballot.
Unfortunately, we've seen a dramatic rise in disinformation, including false claims like those spewed tonight by the President, designed to make people doubt our elections, and even intimidate our trusted public servants who run them. Our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter can cast their ballot. And our local clerks, our neighbors, ensure that happens. We trust our clerks working to protect our voting rights. Not those who hope to gain by undermining them.
Our democracy, our government, and our elections belong to the people.
