We’re in the fight of our lifetime against the Trump administration. Help fuel our urgent work to protect civil liberties in 2026 and beyond.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan is seeking undergraduate interns for the 2026 summer season. The American Civil Liberties Union is the largest and oldest organization in the US dedicated to protecting and expanding the civil rights and liberties of all people in this nation through litigation, public education, advocacy, and organizing. The ACLU’s work addresses a wide range of constitutional and civil rights issues, including criminal law reform, immigrants’ rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, freedom of speech, religious freedom, reproductive freedom, voting rights, police misconduct, prisoners’ rights, and privacy.
We are seeking students from a wide range of disciplines, including public policy, communications, political science, social work, and pre-law. This internship position is interdisciplinary, and interns will work with our legal, political, and communications departments. Specific projects may include work related to our democracy project, legal intake, legal and legislative research, and drafting communications assets. In addition to a vibrant and innovative culture, the ACLU of Michigan offers interns a rewarding summer experience, including opportunities to attend court hearings and social activities, as well as benefit from direct supervision and mentorship.
Qualifications:
Stipend: We encourage all applicants to seek internship funds through their educational institution. If you are unable to secure funding from your school for a public interest internship, the ACLU can provide funding to make this opportunity more feasible for students who would otherwise be required to seek paid employment over the summer. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are interested in ACLU funding.
Location: This internship is hybrid, requiring some in-person attendance in Detroit.
Commitment : Our summer undergraduate internship requires a 10- to 12-week commitment. Depending on organizational needs, we may offer one full- or two part-time internships. Please indicate in your cover letter if you are interested in a full-time or part-time internship, or both.
Applications: To apply, submit your resume and a cover letter by email to acluinternship@aclumich.org.
