The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, and National Homelessness Law Center sent an eight-page letter to the East Lansing mayor and City Council members on January 30th, 2026, outlining why a proposed ordinance that seeks to prohibit camping on public property and impose civil infractions will criminalize unhoused people and violates the Michigan Constitution.
The letter also states that the proposed ordinance fails to address the systemic problems that created a homelessness crisis, not just in East Lansing, but across much of the nation. It also calls on the city to develop a plan to address this crisis.
