Head shot of Abril Valdes

Immigrant Rights Attorney

Abril Valdes Siewert joined the ACLU of Michigan in 2017 as the Immigrant Rights Attorney. Her practice focuses on managing the organization’s Immigrant Justice Partnership (IJP). She dedicates her time to educating immigrant communities, attorneys, and the general public about immigration law and policy. During the Trump administration’s unprecedented practice of separating immigrant families at the border, Abril played a key role in the reunification of families sent to Michigan.

Abril’s personal background has given her great appreciation for the immigrant experience and perspective. Her family emigrated to Southern California from Mexico City when she was five-years-old. She is keenly aware that if the government has the power to deny legal rights and due process to one vulnerable group, everyone’s rights are at risk.

Abril earned her bachelor’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles and Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. She is licensed in the state of Michigan and California.
