DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan applauds Governor Gretchen Whitmer for signing an Executive Directive today that prohibits state government from discriminating against LGBT people, as well as organizations that receive state contracts and grants or provide government services. For far too long the LGBT community has been denied the same rights afforded other Michigan citizens and this moves the state in the right direction.

ACLU LGBT Legal Project Attorney Jay Kaplan issued the following:

“We thank Governor Whitmer for signing today's Executive Directive, which makes it clear that LGBT people are to be treated fairly and accorded the same dignity as other Michigan residents. We appreciate that she understands the history of discrimination that LGBT people have faced in Michigan, and is righting this history of wrongs. Today's Directive is a significant step forward towards achieving full equality for LGBT people in our state.”
