DETROIT—A federal judge this evening agreed to extend for two more weeks an order that prevents Immigration and Customs Enforcement from deporting Iraqi nationals detained anywhere in the US.

“This order is a reprieve for hundreds of families who fear for the lives of their loves ones, many of whom have been in this country for decades,” said Michael J. Steinberg, Legal Director for the ACLU of Michigan. “Iraqi nationals will now have more time to prove to immigration court judges that they will likely be persecuted, tortured or killed if deported. We must ensure that our immigration policy doesn’t operate as a death sentence for anyone.“
