Summary
The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center are hosting a training that will enable attorneys off all practices, including without immigration law experience, to represent detained immigrants, who are entitled to a bond hearing in Immigration Court.
The ACLU of Michigan and the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center are hosting a training that will enable attorneys - from all practices - to represent detained immigrants, who are entitled to a bond hearing in Immigration Court. This training will include procedural and practical advice to prepare you to take on a case pro-bono.
Many people held in immigration detention are eligible for release on bond, but are not able to win release because they are not represented by counsel, therefore languish in custody for months or years. This training will provide an overview of bond hearings for attorneys who are new to immigration practice.
Michael Carlin (Law Office of Michael Carlin PLLC) and Hillary Scholten (Michigan Immigrant Rights Center), two expert practitioners, will discuss how to request a bond hearing, the factors at issue during bond hearings, how and what kind of evidence to prepare and submit, and what happens during a bond hearing.
Attorneys from all practices are welcome. No prior immigration experience is required. Please purchase your ticket for this training and lunch. We hope to see you there on Friday, Dec. 7!
