Pride Month is here. Along with celebrating our authentic selves, I think of June as a time to celebrate how far we have come — and how far we still need to go.
Because of the tireless work by LGBTQ+ people and our allies, much progress has been made in Michigan and nationwide over the past decades. Sadly, we are now also experiencing continued and relentless attacks against the LGBTQ+ community from the White House on down. This is particularly true for trans people, who have been facing targeted attacks by the Trump administration and politicians around the country who see them not as human beings, but rather use trans people as scapegoats with the intention to divide voters.
But we are far from helpless.
