ACLU Urges Jackson Police Chief and Sheriff to End Foot Chases in Letter

DETROIT — Today the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan (ACLU) sent a letter to the Jackson Police Chief and Jackson County Sheriff urging the police department to end foot chases one year since the police-involved killing of 29-year-old Joey Ramirez. The ACLU advocates for the adoption of a new policy that emphasizes no foot pursuit whenever possible, to avoid unnecessary violence and protect officers, suspects, and the public.

The ACLU's letter cites language and date from police departments nationwide that have adopted non-pursuit policies, including the Baltimore and Cincinnati police departments.
