The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan (ACLU) and Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC) issued the following statements in response to today’s announcement by the Michigan Supreme Court that it has strengthened protections against the arrest of everyone required to attend state courts, including immigrants.
“Ensuring that everyone can exercise their fundamental right to access the justice system is essential to a well-functioning democracy. The amended rule helps to achieve that goal,” said Loren Khogali, ACLU executive director.
"The court rule promotes full participation by noncitizens in state proceedings - that benefits all Michiganders. We applaud this commonsense clarification," said Susan Reed, director of MIRC.
