The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan (ACLU) condemns the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) demand that the Wayne County clerk turn over its 2024 ballots and other election materials within 14 days or face legal action. This demand is part of a pattern the Trump administration is engaging in across the country to stoke fear and to undermine state-run elections, and the will of the people. The DOJ’s demand for the 2024 ballots is based on false claims that have been debunked repeatedly. This ploy is intended to sow distrust in our democratic process ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Our local communities run our elections. Not the federal government. Michigan elections officials and election workers work hard to carry out each step of the checks and balances in our election system to ensure every eligible voter can cast a ballot and that every vote is counted.
The ACLU will remain steadfast in our efforts to protect our elections and the dedicated and capable work of our local election officials across the state, including the hundreds of community members and volunteers who help run successful elections for our communities.
