FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DETROIT, Mich. – To show unwavering support for our transgender friends, family, neighbors and community, the ACLU of Michigan kicks off the start of Pride Month with a message that runs the length of its first-floor offices in midtown Detroit on Woodward Avenue, ‘Trans People Will Not Be Erased.”

At a time when transgender people, especially trans youth, are under attack, the ACLU invites all passersby to send a message of support by taking a selfie in front of the window and sending it to the ACLU via the QR code or by adding #ACLUMiPRIDE.

Jay Kaplan, ACLU of Michigan Nancy Katz & Margo Dichtelmiller LGBTQ+ Rights Project Staff Attorney, released this statement:

“Given the widespread attacks on transgender people, especially transgender youth, it is vitally important to show our support for this community during Pride Month and beyond. The dangerous laws coming from state and national politicians attempting to keep transgender youth from participating in sports and receiving lifesaving gender-affirming care is hateful and bigoted. The Pride window banner is one way to say to the transgender community, we see you, we support you, and we will never stop fighting to protect your right to live free from discrimination.”

Loren Khogali, ACLU of Michigan Executive Director, released this statement:

“Pride Month is not only a time to celebrate all the gains made by the LGBTQ+ community, but a time for protest. While our pink window banner is a nod to this celebratory period, it is also a resounding rejection of the vicious attacks by elected leaders hoping to score political points on the backs of transgender people and children. Transgender people belong. Transgender people have always belonged - and we will not let them be erased.”
