Female Athletes Must Be Treated Equally, ACLU Tells Local Schools

DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan sent a letter today to the Downriver League (DRL) urging the athletic conference to immediately repeal an illegal policy that treats girls’ high school basketball less favorably than boys’ basketball. In violation of federal law, the policy reduces the number of referees for girls’ basketball while retaining the number of referees for boys’ basketball. > Full Story

ACLU, Detroit Police Settle Pregnancy Discrimination Lawsuit

DPD Agrees To Implement New Policy With Strong Protections Against Pregnancy Discrimination

DETROIT – The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan announced today that it has settled its lawsuit against the Detroit Police Department on behalf of pregnant officers who were automatically forced to go on unpaid leave while pregnant. The settlement was reached one day before the trial was set to begin.

DPD Discriminates Against Pregnant Officers, ACLU Charges in Federal Lawsuit

DETROIT -- In an effort to protect the rights of women, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan filed a federal lawsuit late yesterday on behalf of five Detroit Police officers who were forced to go on unpaid leave after becoming pregnant. The lawsuit charges that the Detroit Police Department discriminated against the officers in violation of the Civil Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution.

DETROIT -- The American Civil Liberties Union today filed a federal sex discrimination lawsuit against a Detroit landlord after the company evicted a domestic violence victim from her home.  The management company has refused to revise a policy that evicts all tenants whose “guests” create a disturbance or damage the property, including tenants who are victims of domestic violence.

Women Allowed to Join Fraternal Order of Eagles

Ground-Breaking Settlement Opens Door to Women Throughout State

DETROIT – In a victory for women’s equality, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and the National Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) have reached an agreement that the organization will change their “men-only” policy and allow women to become full and equal members.  A similar agreement was also reached with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) regarding gender discrimination charges that were filed against a chapter of the FOE in 2002.

Domestic Violence Victims Will No Longer Be Evicted

First Settlement of Its Kind in Michigan

December 10, 2003 - Press Release

DETROIT – In a precedent-setting settlement, the Ypsilanti Housing Commission (YHC) has agreed to end a policy that led to the eviction of domestic violence victims. The YHC had relied on a “one-strike rule” in its lease that permitted it to evict tenants if there was any violence in a tenant’s apartment – even if the tenant was the victim of the violence.

Detroit -- Today the ACLU of Michigan filed a federal class action lawsuit challenging the treatment of women prisoners at the Livingston County jail. Significantly, the lawsuit challenges as unconstitutional a state law [HB
4475 and 4476] exempting prisoners from the protections of the state human rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, gender, and religion.
