The fact that Luis was born in the U.S. and his mother is a legal permanent resident didn't stop U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from illegally arresting and assaulting them in 2011. The ACLU of Michigan and the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center filed a lawsuit on behalf of the mother and son in April 2012.
From Arizona to Michigan, the stories of racial profiling, intimidation and illegal detention are proof that what happened to Luis and Telma is not unique.
It's time we end such practices and hold law enforcement agencies that use these tactics accountable.
