This Wednesday, the House Families, Children and Seniors Committee will consider legislation that would allow adoption agencies the right to discriminate against certain families, denying a home for a child in need.

Here at the ACLU, we support the rights of private individuals and organizations to freely express their religious beliefs. These bills, however, would allow agencies that receive state funding to place their religious beliefs above the best interests of children in our state.

The shocking thing is that many faith-based child placing agencies already reject loving families because there is no real oversight or public outcry. Michigan should be working to ensure that all our state's children have loving and safe homes, not enshrining discrimination based on sexual orientation, religion or martial status into our laws.

We see these bills every session and, so far, have been successful in stopping them. However, we must make sure that politicians know that the eyes of the public are on them.

Stand with us and contact members of the House Families, Children and Seniors Committee and tell them to vote no on House Bills 4927 and 4928.
