Attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will appear before U.S District Judge Judith E. Levy Wednesday to argue that U.S. immigration authorities immediately release Haitian asylum seeker Ansly Damus, who will be present at the hearing at the court’s request.

Mr. Damus is a father, husband and teacher who sought asylum after a gang beat him and threatened his life for criticizing a political leader. Mr. Damus presented evidence that his life is in danger if he returns to his homeland and won his asylum case twice, but U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement continue to deny his release. Mr. Damus’ U.S. sponsors, who agreed to host him when released, and many supporters also intend to be present at the hearing.
