FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BRIGHTON, Mich. - Today the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan (ACLU) sent a letter to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) urging them to intervene in a potentially racially hostile education environment in Brighton Area Schools after racist social media posts involving a Brighton High School student in blackface and an anti-gay slur.

The ACLU's letter also cites a 2018 incident, in which the ACLU filed a complaint with the MDCR, after a Hawkins Elementary School second grade teacher put a hat with artificial dread locks on the only Black child in class, as his classmates laughed and took photos of him and later shared.

Today's letter urges action and offers possible solutions.
